Salute is on Saturday!

SALUTE 2018 is taking place on Saturday, and I am looking forward to going!

For once I don't have a shopping list because I want to be able to spend time looking around and – more importantly – meeting and talking to people ... especially my fellow bloggers!

I understand that there will be an unofficial get-together at 12.30pm in the centre of the exhibition hall, and as far as I can make out, it will be where the red spot is on the following map:

If I remember to take and wear it, I'll have on my 'official' Wargame Developments identity badge. Otherwise look for the overweight bloke who looks like this:

(The overweight bit might not make me easy to identify in a room full of wargamers and the photo doesn't show all the grey hairs that I seem to have acquired over the past few years ... but at least it looks more like me than my most recent passport photograph!)

I understand that SALUTE 2018 is NOT sharing ExCel with the pre-race gathering for the participants in this year's London Marathon; this year the other main event taking place there is the National Wedding Show.

I must make sure that I don't wander into the wrong show by mistake!

  1. I suspect it may be not be easier to distinguish wargamers from the chaps attending other events this year - they'll be the ones with backpacks and might look happier to be there!

Hopefully we'll be able chat again on Saturday :)

    1. TamsinP,

I did think of commenting that the chaps going to the Wedding Show will need to be clutching bulging wallets if my understanding of the current cost of weddings is anything to go by ... and then I realised that bulging wallets is exactly what the traders at SALUTE will be looking for as well!

Perhaps the South London Warlords show have used the following slogan for this year's show:
WARGAMING: ITS CHEAPER THAN GETTING MARRIED AND CAN GIVE YOU A LIFETIME OF FUN!

Hope to see you on Saturday!

      All the best,

      Bob

    2. Wicked slogan! I'm fortunate that both have given me a lifetime of fun.

    3. William Stewart,

Lucky is the many who has a wife and a hobby that both give pleasure and fun. Like you, I am fortunate in being in that situation.

      All the best,

      Bob

  2. Bob,
I shan't attend Salute - I'll be busy teaching. I hope you have a great day and look forward to reading your impressions here.
My own marriage - special licence, registry office - was far cheaper than many wargames!
Both wargaming and weddings, IMHO, have become tainted by rampant commercialism, intended to persuade people that they must have diorama-standard figures, buildings and terrain or elaborate costumes, receptions, marquees, music &c.
But I like your slogan. Enjoy Salute,
    Arthur

    1. Arthur Harman (Arthur),

Perhaps you'll make it one day ... once you have retired.

My wedding wasn't quite as cheap as yours was, but it cost a lot less than £500 back in 1982 ... and that covered the cost of everything, including the honeymoon. I understand that last year a survey estimated that the average cost of a wedding in the UK is £27,200! That is more than our first house cost!

Unfortunately commercialism is a genie that you just cannot shove back into the bottle ... but I suspect that people like you and I will ignore this trend and still try to create wargames that are cheap and fun.

      All the best,

      Bob

  3. I bet Tamsin's right on this one ;)

I bet there will be a few secret wargaming Grooms from the other event who go AWOL at some point during the day ;) or some Grooms who decide to take up a new hobby and the Bride-to=be is left with the Best Man :O

    1. Geordie an Exile FoG,

I'm sure that she is right ... but somehow I doubt that any self-respecting groom-to-be (or bride-to-be) will miss out on attending the wedding show to go to SALUTE ... unless they want to be an ex-groom/bride-to-be!

      All the best,

      Bob
