Heard in the Sudan

I recently found a glossary of words in a book about the Sudan campaigns that took place during the latter part of the nineteenth century, and it struck me that it would be an interesting exercise to see how many of them my regular blog readers knew.

  1. A good many surprises in this list Bob!

I'm wary of making a guess on most of them so cannot give a score at all.

  2. Legatus Hedlius,

I would have said that 20 was a good score!

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Jim Duncan,

Go on, have a guess! Only you will know how well you have done.

    All the best,

  4. Xaltotun of Python,

28 is better than I would have done before I looked up the answers!

    All the best,

    Bob

  5. Mis-spent old age.

    And middle age.

    And not forgetting my youth.

  6. Xaltotun of Python,

I could say the same, I'm afraid.

    All the best,

  7. I've encountered around 18, but I couldn't define all of those. (Also, bemused to see Voyageurs on the list. I usually associate those with French Canada... :) )

  8. Fitz-Badger,

I created this list from various sources about the Sudan campaigns, which is why I snuck the 'Voyageurs' in. After all, they were there!

I hope that you enjoyed the 'challenge' of trying to recognise some of the words ... and be warned; there is another Indian-based 'quiz' in the pipeline!

    All the best,

    Bob
